The National Hockey League, known as the NHL, is the premier professional hockey league in the world.

The NHL was created on November 22, 1917 in Montreal after the suspension of a previous league called the National Hockey Association (NHA). The NHL began with four teams, although one had to leave the league after six games when its arena burned down.

Today, the NHL is proudly made up of 30 teams spread throughout the United States and Canada. There are seven NHL teams in Canada (Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and Winnipeg Jets) and 23 from the United States (Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Washington Capitals).

Each team plays an 82–game season that decides which teams participate in the playoffs. And each spring, one team wins the NHL’s championship trophy–the Stanley Cup!

N starts the letters that spell NHL—a league full of stars that we all know so well.
